Work With Us

Help us make housing assistance information clear, accurate, and accessible to the people who need it most.

About the Work

House for Homeless publishes plain-language guides about housing assistance programs — Section 8 vouchers, emergency rental assistance, shelters, and state-specific aid. Our readers are often in difficult circumstances, which means the bar for accuracy and clarity is higher than on a typical website. Everything we publish is researched from official government and agency sources.

We work with remote freelance contributors on a per-project basis.

Roles We Work With

Freelance Content Writers

Research and write guides about housing assistance programs, eligibility requirements, and application processes.

  • Strong research skills using government sources (HUD, state agency sites, benefits.gov)
  • Ability to write at a 7th–8th grade reading level without losing accuracy
  • Experience with benefits, housing, legal aid, or social services content preferred

Subject-Matter Reviewers

Review drafted guides for factual accuracy before publication.

  • Professional experience in housing services, case management, social work, or benefits administration
  • Familiarity with how programs actually work on the ground, not just on paper
  • Reviewed guides are credited with your name and credentials

Researchers and Fact-Checkers

Verify program details across our existing library — income limits, contact information, application links — and flag anything that has changed.

  • Detail-oriented, comfortable navigating government websites and documents
  • Systematic approach to verifying and documenting sources

Our Standards

  • Every factual claim must be traceable to an official source
  • Plain language always — short sentences, no jargon, no filler
  • No exaggerated promises: we never tell readers they “will qualify” or “are guaranteed” assistance
  • Crisis resources (211, hotlines) are included wherever readers may be in urgent need
  • AI tools may assist research and drafting, but every published guide is human-reviewed and source-verified

Note: This page is about working on the website’s content. It is not a job board for housing assistance programs, and we cannot offer employment assistance or housing placement. If you need housing help, call 211.
